A UPS is not about running forever. It is about keeping the router, switch, NAS, and lab host alive long enough to ride out small outages or shut down cleanly.

What matters most

  • USB signaling for shutdown automation.
  • Enough watt capacity for the real load.
  • Replaceable batteries.
  • Runtime long enough for graceful shutdown, not all-night operation.

What I would buy first

For a small home lab, I would protect the router, switch, NAS, and primary host. If budget forces a choice, protect storage and network gear before nonessential compute.

Source checks: APC's BE600M1 page lists a 600VA Back-UPS with 7 NEMA outlets and USB charging; CyberPower's CP1500PFCLCD page describes a 1500VA/1000W PFC sinewave UPS for computers, networking devices, and home entertainment gear.
